Cervélo is taking its six-year sponsorship of the Battlefield Bike Ride to the next level by donating ten C5 framesets with a Wounded Warriors Canada paint job.

When Canadian Armed Forces veteran Todd McGowan first saw the collector’s-edition frameset, he was on the home stretch of the week-long 2018 Battlefield Bike Ride through Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia.

The 80-rider-strong peloton had already passed through many places of profound significance to CAF members who, like Todd, had served in the Balkans during and after the Croatian War of Independence. Emotions were running high — and then the unique C5 was unveiled.

“This is much more than a bike frame, and truly needs to be honoured as such,” Todd said. “I really don't have the words to express my sincere appreciation.”

As far as Cervélo is concerned, however, Todd and his fellow veterans are the ones who deserve to be thanked. "These heroes make sacrifices and risk their lives," said Robert de Jonge, the company’s Managing Director. "So I speak for everyone at Cervélo when I say that our support for Wounded Warriors Canada is our way of saying thank you again and again.”

As it has done every year since 2012, Cervélo supported the Battlefield Bike Ride with volunteers and high-performance bicycle donations. But 2018 was different, with the 10 donated C5 framesets being custom-designed to honour both the fundraiser’s mission and the heroes it helps: ill and injured Canadian Forces Members, Veterans, First Responders and their families.

The first C5 frameset is now available for purchase as part of a week-long auction that aims to add to the $2.5 million the ride has raised to date. All funds support Wounded Warriors Canada’s national mental health programs and services. To learn more or place a bid, please click here.

Cervélo’s design team incorporated meticulous details such as Wounded Warriors Canada’s “Honour the Fallen, Help the Living” motto on the toptube, and the #INTHISTOGETHERhashtag on the inside of the rear chainstays. “The WWC mission is truly heroic, and to be able to help in even the smallest way was quite an honour for the team,” said Tom Briggs, Cervélo’s Global Graphic Design Manager.

The frame’s ascending three-colour progression — from black to pearlescent green to camouflage — is designed to evoke veterans’ recovery from the trauma of battle, Tom explained. “Our goal was to metaphorically lift the rider to the top of the ultimate endurance road bike, and then ultimately have them power it forward.”

More forward momentum will build in 2019, when the Wounded Warriors Canada Battlefield Bike Ride heads to France from May 30 to June 6 as the world commemorates the 75th anniversary of D-Day. For more information, click here.
