James Cunnama punched his ticket to Kona with an impressive third-place showing that included a personal-best bike split on his Cervélo P5X.

Still, the late start to 2018 meant that before Ironman Hamburg James had yet to qualify for the Ironman World Championships. Now that’s sorted: After a race-best and personal-best bike split of 4:00:44 propelled him to the front of the pack in Hamburg, the P5X rider’s strong showing on the marathon — extended by 6km owing to a cancelled swim — landed him on both the podium and the Kona start list.

“Pleased with the fastest bike split and highest NP/AVG power I've ever had,” James said after the race, “even if the run legs weren't quite up to that ride yet. Onwards to Ironman 70.3 World Champs in South Africa, then Kona and the big dance.

“Work to do, but time to do it.”
