Susie Cheetham

Susie is an Ironman and 70.3 athlete from England. She became interested in triathlons after tagging along with her husband as he trained for an Ironman. She was beating him on the bike, and had been a competitive runner, so triathlon was a natural step.
In her first race (Ironman 70.3 Antwerp 2011) Susie finished sixth overall. A year later, she entered the same event, as a professional this time, and claimed her first podium. So started her journey to the podium of many 70.3 and full-distance races. Susie has twice finished sixth overall at the Ironman World Championships, and she says that it's all about Kona now: "I think a podium finish is achievable and that’s what’s lighting the fire in my belly, when it gets tough in training that’s what I think of."

What is your proudest sporting achievement?

Probably my first race in Kona. It was all so new to me and I was a bit like a rabbit caught in the headlights. I went in with no expectations and finished in 6th which was above where most people expected me to finish.

What is your proudest non-sporting achievement?

After school I did a year as a commissioned army officer in the British Army. It was such an incredible year and taught me so much. The discipline I learnt in that year I continue to use in my athletic career.

What do you enjoy most about riding bikes?

The new places cycling has helped me discover. I’ve been going to a little Greek village called Molyvos since I was a kid, but since I started cycling and taking my bike with me I’ve discovered so much more. The little mountain villages and communities are incredible and that’s something I wouldn’t have experienced without my bike!

What do you find most challenging about riding bikes?

Bike maintenance! I’ve been lucky but also spoilt that my husband looks after my bikes, but it’s always been a bit of a stress that I’m a little clueless when it comes to bike maintenance. Since I’ve been riding the P5X that stress has been lessened as it’s a bike that’s so easy to work with and travel with.

What is your favourite Cervélo bike?

The P5X, it’s just so fast. I’ve never been on a bike like it. As it’s so adjustable I can get into a really aero position. There are not many bikes I could replicate my set up on as most aren’t as adjustable as the P5X. I also love the P2 as it was my first ever proper bike when I started triathlon, I won my first pro race on it and still train on it today!
