Cunnama starts season on the podium

“If you have to get beaten, it hurts less when it's your mates in front of you.”

This typically good-natured Instagram quote from James Cunnama came after the Cervélo athlete posted a typically speedly 3:56:26 overall time at Ironman 70.3 South Africa. After a shortened swim, James surged into podium position during his 2:17:43 ride on his P5X, and then nearly chased down countryman (and mate) Bradley Weiss with a second-best half-marathon of 1:18:18.

“Was only good for 3rd today...but I'll take it to start the year,” James said. “Plenty to work on for the next one.”

When a buildup starts with a podium, there’s plenty to work with, too.
