Classic Road

Aside from being an elite triathlete, the Ironman Canada champion’s greatest sporting achievement stems from showing people that racing and training is accessible and fun.

Downhill ski racing was Trevor’s first sporting passion, but road cycling took over the Canadian’s teenage years. He spent four years racing as a Junior and Espoir in Belgium, France and Italy, before his pro cycling dreams took a backseat to his studies. A few years later, however, triathlon reignited his competitive fire. After several strong long-course and Ironman results, he and his triathlete wife, Heather, decided to “go all in” and commit to being the best pro triathletes they could be. They sold their condo, gave away most of their belongings, and bought a small RV as a home base for “Team Wurtele.”

2012 saw Trevor take his first win in an Ironman 70.3 event in New Orleans. He backed that up with a fourth-place finish at the Ironman USA Championships in New York City, and was awarded the 2012 Elite male long-course Triathlete of the Year from Triathlon Canada. In 2013 he won his first full Ironman on home turf, at Ironman Canada in Whistler, and earned second-place finishes at Ironman 70.3 New Orleans and 70.3 Calgary. In 2014, Trevor stacked up two more 70.3 silvers, at Mont Tremblant and Boise, with the best overall bike split in the latter. It was over this period that Trevor became involved in the development of the Cervelo P5X, both as a test rider and as source of invaluable pro-athlete feedback. After punching his ticket to Kona 2016 with a third-place finish at Ironman Canada and second at Ironman 70.3 Monterrey, Trevor rode the bike he helped create at the Ironman World Championships.

Although Trevor and Heather are now serious contenders in pro triathlon, Canada’s iron-couple are jointly known for their nomadic lifestyle, lighthearted blog entries and Trevor’s wacky race report videos.
