Designed For Disc

Cervélo says the C Series, and now the new R3 Disc and R5 Disc bikes, are “Designed for Disc.” What does this entail? How are the framesets engineered differently?

The convergence of a series of industry standards has allowed our engineering team to make the most of technologies that have been on our radar for years.  

Let’s start with thru-axles: They boost lateral stiffness in the fork, and improve alignment ease-of-use and safety. A “semi-floating” derailleur hanger improves alignment still further and delivers the best possible shifting every time. 

The removal of seatstay-mounted rear brakes permits a wider seatstay placement, which has improved bottom-bracket stiffness significantly. The single-piece rear triangle, the result of a new manufacturing process, eliminates bond joints and produces a stronger, stiffer and more stable back end.  

Compatibility with other braking systems is important. That’s why we incorporated the flat-mounting standard, which is compatible with virtually all commonly used calipers and rotor sizes via adapters. 

We further refined these technologies with the launch of the R5 Disc and R3 Disc. Our new Rapid Axle features quick-locking inserts and graphics that help make installation fast and easy.
