New R Series speeds to fourth

Nathan Haas just missed the podium in Sunday’s Amstel Gold Race on a prototype model of the completely re-engineered R Series.

Dimension Data delivered an aggressive team performance in the 261-km Dutch race that’s famous for its many short, sharp climbs. The first of the Ardennes Classics saw Johann Van Zyl bridge across to an early breakaway that was eventually swallowed up by the peloton with 40 kms remaining.

Eight riders, including the well-positioned Haas, then broke away for good before the sprint finish. Kristian Sbaragli wasn’t far behind, and also showed great legs in sprinting to 16th place and giving the team two riders in the Top 20.

“Today, everybody was just awesome,” Haas said. “We have had a lot of bad luck in the past few months and the Classics haven’t been what the guys deserved after all their hard work. Today, we really wanted to put a pin in it. We went into this race with only one goal in mind: To race it with balls.”
