Giro glory on the new R5
Team Dimension Data’s Omar Fraile earned his first-ever World Tour victory on Stage 11 of the 100th Giro d’Italia.
What a day for Fraile and his DiData team! The Spaniard charged into the lead on the second of four categorised climbs, and stayed at or near the front on his Cervelo R5 till the end of the thrilling queen stage across the Apennines.
Along the way, Fraile claimed KOM points on three of the climbs, vaulting him into 2nd place for the overall blue jersey. Igor Anton, meanwhile, did inspiring work all day long by breaking clear on the first climb, taking points for the intermediate sprint, and supporting Fraile during the stage’s dramatic turning point.
After being caught by Anton and the rest of the chase group with 33 kms to go, Fraile launched another stirring attack to break away one last time. He won the fourth KOM, descended on his own, and then held off his pursuers in the final sprint to produce a historic victory: The first ever for an Africa-based team at the Giro.
