Cervélo S5 marks its most successful year

The speed machine that won the most stages at the 2016 Tour de France is now available in an eye-catching new colourway.

The speed machine that won the most stages at the 2016 Tour de France is now available in an eye-catching new colourway.

Dimension Data’s inaugural season in the UCI World Tour was also a banner year for the S5. Cervélo’s fastest aero road bike was ridden to 28 victories, including six stages of the Tour de France. Outside of time trials, every single one of DDD’s wins came on the S5.

What’s most impressive about the TdF total is that the victories came in sprints by Mark Cavendish and on a mountain stage courtesy of Steve Cummings. As road.cc points out: “Underlining the unexpected versatility of Cervélo’s S5 aero bike, Dimension Data’s Cummings rode essentially the same bike as Cavendish uses, albeit with a change to shallow-section carbon wheels, to success on a mountain stage.”

Cummings himself revealed how much he likes the S5: “It suits me very well. First of all the bike’s light enough to go under the weight limit, so you can use it in the climb. It’s an aero bike, so obviously it’s very fast on the flats as well. Basically, you can use it for every stage in the Tour. It’s unique to have a bike like that. I feel good on it, I feel good in the corners, downhill...I really like the bike.”
