Cav comes close in London

Mark Cavendish put in a courageous performance on his Cervelo T4 at London Six Day.

At the start of Friday’s action, the Manx Missile and teammate Peter Kennaugh were in fifth place following Cavendish’s three victories at the Lee Valley VeloPark. Another win for Cav in the 10km Scratch Race helped move the pair into the Top 3 heading into the weekend. More ground was gained in Saturday’s Madison Chase thanks to a second-place showing, with victory in the 60-lap Derny “A” Final vaulting the pair into second spot and setting the stage for a Sunday showdown with leaders Callum Scotson and Cameron Meyer.

The duel did not disappoint. After Meyer and Scotson faltered in the Elimination Race and finished last in the 250-metre Madison Time Trial, Cavendish and Kennaugh’s impressive second in the Elimination meant that the Six Day title would come down to the aptly-named Final Chase.

Despite several lead changes, Cavendish and Kennaugh couldn’t recoup the lap they needed and finished the competition in second place overall.

“I’m incredibly proud because I used to babysit for this lad,” said Cavendish of Kennaugh, who is four years his junior and was making his Six Day debut.
