Xavier Florencio out of Tour
July 02, 2010 - Filed under:
TestTeam
Comments (18)
Rider Xavier Florencio will not start for Cervélo TestTeam at the Tour de France this year. Although he was nominated for the team, the team has decided to immediately withdraw him due to a violation of internal policies.
Consistent with the team's internal values, TestTeam riders are required to obtain permission from the team's medical staff before they can use any supplements or medication.
This evening, the team learned that Xavier Florencio has been using a substance containing ephedrine to treat a saddle discomfort. This substance was not cleared in advance with the medical staff. This usage without clearance violates the internal policy.
The rider is suspended from competition until the team can make a final determination based on all the facts. At this point there is no information yet on whether the rider can or will be replaced.

Is there not a warning and grace period?

Felt genuine shock when I read about this, hopefully just a stupid mistake but it has certainly been handled correctly. Just hope that a subsitution is allowed at this late stage, Bos would probably be the best bet.

As I understand it, there is nothing "fishy" about it. This is a fairly commonly used medication. However, CTT is operating at a higher level where its own policies prohibit usage without notification. Congratulations to Cervelo management for sticking with its policies. It is a sad thing, because due to a silly error in judgment an otherwise good rider is out and the entire team suffers. Oh well, CTT is withering, wounded, and aging ... and the TDF hasn't even started!!!
Cervelo, once again, is leading the industry by example.

Well done for the openness and honesty - good to see rather than sweeping it under the bulging cycling carpet! Hopefully it will just have been an oversight.
Couldn't agree more with a few of the other commentors, bring in Roger Hammond, would be great to see him having a run around France.

What in the infinite heavens exists to treat saddle discomfort that contains ephedrine!! A vasocontricting, central nervous system stimulant on the butt?? I think something else is going on here, and it smells like fish.

I hope this doesn't adversely affect Carlos' chances. Who is going to replace him?

why not give teddy a chance to fill the spot he just finished the giro and should be in good shape. although roger would be a good choice also. hope they fill the spot sucks for the team to be at a disadvantage at the start.

Anti-doping rules are way to severe, it should be possible to treat pains and disseases with to much thinking.
But rules are what they are, so if you break them, you get suspended.
Florencio should have known the rules....

Terrible news, how is it possible to be that stupid?
We are certainly not allowed to replace him, because he is caught for doping and nothing else..
If it had been accidental, then that would had been an other story.

""Where did he get the stuff? Are riders still using medicines they get from others than the teamdoctors? When will they ever learn???""
Questions he has to answer for now..

And what happened? Where did he get the stuff? Are riders still using medicines they get from others than the teamdoctors? When will they ever learn???
And now it seems 'we' are down to 8...- before the party even starts.
Thank you Florencio; you sure know how to kill a party!
But I'll still wear my Cervelogear with pride as CTT shows they mean business and take action...
(And I guesss Florencio will need some taking care of - bet you'll see to that too...)

Wow, that's really Shocking to read, but it do sounds like a honest mistake..
I'm struggling to make a stand, I hope Cervélo will do the right thing it's a difficult choice to take.
I understand that why they want to use the time..

It would be great to see Roger Hammond fill this spot. But I am happy to see the team stick to its anti doping stance. I hope the team can put this behind them. On the eve of the tour.

Sad to see him out, but great to see a team that has balls and sticks with its strict anti-doping stance.

Sad to hear, but I am glad that the TestTeam sticks by its convictions and values. I hope the team has a great Tour de France.
