Wetterhall and Teklehaymanot join Cervélo TestTeam as stagiaires

July 29, 2010 - Filed under: TestTeam
For the rest of the season, Alexander Wetterhall from Sweden and Daniel Teklehaymanot from Eritrea will join Cervélo TestTeam as stagiaires.

The 24-year-old Wetterhall, from southern Sweden, started his career as a mountain biker before moving to road cycling in 2008. Already in his first year on the road, he became Swedish national champion in the individual time trial. The 2010 season also started promisingly, with overall victory in the Irish tour FDB Insurance Rás and a stage victory in the Ringerike Grand Prix. Wetterhall will join the team next week in the Post Tour of Denmark, which starts on the 4th of August.

In addition to Wetterhall, Cervélo TestTeam will welcome another international rider into its ranks. Teklehaymanot, a 21-year-old rider from Eritrea, is one of the most promising African riders. In 2008 he won his first national title in the road race and also claimed victory in the individual time trial (category U23) at the African Championships. A year later he took two stage victories at the Tour of Eritrea and finished 6th overall in the Tour de l'Avenir. This season he already has a stage win in the Coupe de Nations Ville Saguenay to his credit and took second place in the Berner Rundfahrt. His first appearance in the Cervélo TestTeam colors is planned for the one-day race Chateauroux Classic de l'Indre in France at the end of August.

No he's not the first. The first black rider in a European continental race was Adrien Niyonshuti from Rwanda riding with the MTN squad , he rode the 2009 Tour of Ireland.

But I always wonder if some of those Ethopians or Kenyans ever got on a bike how good they could be? if their ability on a bike compared favourably to their ability to run they could be something special

Marshall "Major" Taylor was the first African American World Champion in 1899. It was for Track racing, but I think he may also have done Road racing later on.

Rahsan Bahati comes to mind, who was on Rock Racing, and now the Bahati Foundation. Though I'm not sure about UCI ProTour or European Continental.
