The first stage of the new Tour of Oman race was won today by Jimmy Casper (Saur-Sojasun) who was faster in the sprint than Edvald Boasson (Team Sky) and Kenny De Haes (Omega Pharma-Lotto). The 61km evening criterium consisted of 16 laps and was raced in front of an enormous crowd. The night component saw the peloton ride cautiously throughout the first 14 laps opening up in the last two for the final. read more
"It was something really special today in this first stage" said Jens Zemke sports director. "There was a big opening ceremony and the start was in the dark with many spectators, a big difference compared with the Tour of Qatar. In today's stage we were quite active, right from the beginning with Martin Reimer and Joaquin Novoa both in the break away group. In the final the sprinters team started to prepare the sprint and Dominique tried to be up there and ended in twelfth place. Tomorrow it will be up and down, with much more profile than in Qatar, so we can expect some really interesting climbs in the upcoming stages."
"The race was interesting today. It was good to see so many people out for the race but racing in the dark makes it pretty dangerous" said Dominique Rollin. "It was pretty difficult in the final, Team Sky and HTC - Columbia tried to prepare the sprint and I tried to be in a good position. I ended in twelfth spot and I will look for another chance in the coming stages."
