For the native Austrian Stefan Denifl, his home country tour concluded today with an excellent 7th place in the overall ranking. On the last stage, 122.8 km from Podersdorf to Vienna, Cervélo TestTeam again rode very offensively finishing 4th and 5th in the final sprint with Roger Hammond (GBR) and Martin Reimer (GER). The team also worked hard for the strong GC showing of Denifl, who finished today’s stage in 43rd, the same time as stage winner Graeme Brown (AUS). Germans Robert Förster and André Greipel finished in second and third respectively. Riccardo Ricco was the overall winner of the 62nd edition of the Tour of Austria even with his big crash with a motorbike yesterday.
“Today’s stage was again a tough one. Racing in temperatures of 36°C is not easy,” explained Jens Zemke, Sports Director Cervélo TestTeam. “On the final stage, a group of four Austrians found their chance and escaped but were chased back about 10 km from the finish by the sprinter teams. Our guys, after this long 8-stage tour, were quite aggressive today proven by the Roger’s fourth place and Martin’s fifth place finish in the bunch sprint. Stefan came in on at a safe 43rd place in the same time as the winner and confirmed his 7th overall rank. I have to say “chapeau” a (tip of the hat) to Stefan – he did a respectful performance for a just 22-year-old rider. The equipment, we have to add, helped us a lot. For example Stefan’s P4 is a perfect match for him and he felt very good during the time trial. It is also the reason, for sure, why he is getting stronger and stronger in the time trial and could made the jump from the 9th to the 7th place in the GC. All in all, I am really satisfied with the Tour of Austria. It was a well done tour and we were always present on the podium with Stefan as the best Austrian rider.”
After the Tour of Austria, a portion of the riders will be going to Switzerland to do high altitude training, to prepare for the last part of the cycling season.
