Hushovd and Sastre both ready for the Tour

June 21, 2010 - Filed under: TestTeam
Carlos Sastre (ESP), 2008 Tour de France champion, and Thor Hushovd (NOR), 2009 green jersey winner, will serve as the team captains for Cervélo TestTeam in the Tour de France. Both riders have suffered from injuries this season, but the two captains have recovered are ready to race in the upcoming Tour de France.

Hushovd, who broke his collarbone in May, returned to racing last week in the Tour de Suisse. "I was really happy with my performance in the Tour de Suisse," said Hushovd. "When I started that race it was hard, so I took it easy, with no pressure from the team. I just did my race and prepared myself, and now I feel that I am ready for the Tour. My goals for the Tour are, like last year, to win the green jersey and to go for a stage win. The first week will be an especially interesting one, with the prologue and the stages toward Arenberg."

Sastre, who won the race in 2008, decided together with the Cervélo TestTeam doctors that he will be able to start in Rotterdam. His participation was initially in doubt due to back injuries sustained during the Giro d'Italia.

"I had problems with my back that reappeared after the crash in the Giro," he explained, "but thanks to the physiotherapist and doctors I consulted, these problems have disappeared and lately I have been training without pain. I have another 12 days of preparation and will be fit at the start of the Tour de France.

"At 35 years, I have a lot of experience. I will use that experience during my tenth Tour de France. I will be at the start line with enthusiasm and high morale. It is a really hard race, but that is the challenge that every athlete likes."

Edit:

"but he has said himself that his goal is for the Tour is top 7 overall.. "

... or he wouldn't have started.

Meaning he will go for Top 7 at the Tour.

Agree with Alex that Sastre should skip the TDF and focus on the Vuelta. CTT should have included Tondo in the roster...

Unfortunately, Sastre can't realistically win the Vuelta either..

Personally I had hoped that he did go for the Polka dot jersey at the Tour de France, but he has said himself that his goal is for the Tour is top 7 overall..

I think Carlos should skip the tour and prepare for the Vuelta, because he could win it and finish the last few years of his career on a high note.
