Haussler in car accident

May 23, 2010 - Filed under: TestTeam
Heinrich Haussler of Cervélo TestTeam was involved in a car accident on Saturday night. There were no injuries reported but both cars sustained considerable damage.

Haussler had been racing at the Amgen Tour of California this past week, but returned home Thursday to have his knee checked at the Crossklinik in Basel as a precaution, after two crashes during that race.

The accident occurred as Haussler made his way home after a party in Freiburg on Saturday night. The police took him in for questioning and tests concluded that his blood-alcohol level was over the legal limit.

"I want to apologize to my teammates and the entire Cervélo TestTeam and in particular to our fans and partners," said the 26-year-old Haussler. "I was extremely disappointed about my early return from the Tour of California because of my knee problems and needed a diversion. That said, there is no excuse for my behaviour. It was irresponsible and unprofessional and I deeply regret my actions."

Cervélo TestTeam does not condone his behaviour and has full confidence in the German authorities to take the appropriate action. At the same time, the team will work with Heinrich to make sure he understands the consequences of his actions and the appropriate behaviour required of him in the future.

Heinrich,

Please act responsibly. You are one of my idols when it comes to cycling and it is upsetting to hear about this. Just remember that people look up to you so not only do you have a responsibility for yourself, but for those people as well. Take care and best of luck with your season, I'm still cheering for ya!!

This article was a shock. Gotta admit, it's nice to see an article about a cyclist getting in trouble and it's NOT for steroids. This Team needs you for France and fans are already worried enough that Thor may not be ready due to his injury. It would be a complete letdown if you're out of the Tour de France because of a DUI.

Disappointed, but very thankful all parties survived without injury. Detox and saddle up, man, you have some ground to recover with us. Glad you're okay, and kick some ass.

Whether a professional cyclist or a simple enthusiast I'm pretty sure we all know of someone who has been injured (or tragically worse, killed) due to a motorist driving with no regard for anyone other than themselves. I read this and my heart sank - a guy and a team (with proud ethics) I admire and aspire to......................

I love this team and support all the riders. But this is just upsetting to me due to the fact that I live where every week, there is a bike rider that got killed because of a drunk driver. This news upsets me but I will not stop supporting a team that shows determination and dedication.

How dumb was that?

Please promise yourself that you will never, never eveer again drive when you've been drinking!!! - unless, of course, if you think you can live with yourself if you should destroy somebodies life...

And now is the time to stand up straight, face the music, get that knee sorted and get on your bike - which is what you ought to have done yesterday!

Everybody stumbles - it's how one gets up that tells the world what he's made of!

Good luck!
