Sep Vanmarcke shelled favorites out of the main break with a ferocious attack and bested the remaining two in the sprint for the win!
“A dream came true today!” said a nearly speechless Vanmarcke after the race.
“It was a fast day right from the start and our first real meeting point where we said, we have to be in the front was after 140km, the Taaienberg,” said birthday boy Heinrich Haussler who took the field sprint for fourth.”
“That’s where a group went up the road with Sep in it and the rest of us could stay in the group and save our energy in case it did come back together again.”
” Sep was so strong all day, and I didn’t see it but I heard he really the strongest rider in the front and then won the sprint which was an amazing effort.”
“This is a perfect way to start off the classics and great for the team’s confidence. This is something we can really build on. I also have to say a big thank you to our mechanics because our bikes were perfect and flying along the cobbles today. All in all it was a great day.”
