How “integrated” is the P5 for Di2?

How “integrated” is the P5 for the Shimano Di2?
Answer:
The P5 is fully integrated for Di2 installation, including internal cables and battery completely hidden inside the frame’s “hidden pocket”.
The transparent CAD image above shows where the Di2 battery (red) fits inside the hidden pocket storage compartment which is built into the P5’s frame. The original Shimano Di2 battery is neatly stored inside the P5’s seat tube in the area above the BBrightTM bottom bracket: this is the “hidden pocket.” This is an aero benefit, since a typical external Di2 battery can add up to 11 grams of aero drag. Unlike a custom battery, using Shimano’s original battery and connectors keeps Shimano’s Di2 warranty intact.
To access the hidden pocket, simply remove the rear wheel and unscrew the cover. The battery slides out easily as the electrical cables are also inside the frame and stay neatly connected to the battery holder.
If your P5 is assembled without Di2, then the hidden pocket is available to store other things, such as a spare inner tube, etc.
The Aduro aero bar is also Di2 ready, as the shift wires route through the extensions and stem, and directly into the frame through the ICS passage in the top tube.
The CAD image above shows mechanical routing but Di2 cables follow a similar path.
The junction box fits inside the stem near the front of the base bar under the bolted cover.
Alternatively, if you want to have access to the junction box at all times, it can be attached to the side or top of the stem with double sided tape. The Aduro aero bar has a Di2 cable exit port at the trailing edge of the stem to let the cables out. Another more visible option would be directly on top of the stem. Of these two options, the best aero position may be on the side of the stem, in the wake of the base bar.
Thanks for asking!

Hi Alexander, Yes. There is only 1 P5 frame, it's the same in all P5 models, so no difference in Di2 functionality. Cheers, -Damon

Hi Keith, Thanks for your order. The P5 includes two aero bar heights (High-V and Low), the Hidden Pocket for the Di2 battery (or other stuff) and the bottle mount for the aero bars. Other P5 accessories are currently being developed by TorHans, X-Lab and Dark Speed Works and possibly others. Have your Cervelo retailer contact these guys directly about planned availability. Cheers, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer.

Hi Ferdinand, Thank you for writing. Now that you point it out, I see what you mean. I appreciate your kind and constructive feedback and I will take it to heart. Peter, I hope you weren't offended by the tone of my reply - and please accept my apologies if you were. Ferdinand has said it much better than I did. Thanks everyone, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer.

Damon Rinard, your wrote: "... get your order in with your Cervelo retailer and get in the queu for the fastest road bike on the planet!" ..., you realize that even though this is a truthfull answer, it is very unfriendly and has a tone of arrogance & client could take offence and lose your potential buyer. You basically told a potential customer to "GET IN LINE BUDDY!!" & may have deflated his enthusiasm for the bike. It should be writen something like this: "Hi Peter, The S5 VWD is a great success, but unfortunately, we are bit overwhelmed by the demand. I hate to say this but delivery may be as late as MY2013 in the fall. However, we are trying our best to keep up with demand and we looking to improve our delivery and maintain absolute Cervelo quality. I trust that being honest with you, you will not be discouraged in placing an order for the S5. We pride in making the fastest road bike on the planet, but it take time to build them! Hope you will order one. Cheers, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer Hope this helps you Damon in responding to potential Cervelo buyers in the future. Hi Jim, The reason we don't deliver brake lever shifting is to have the fastests, lightest, most powerful and most easily modulated brakes in the world. One nuance of that is the hydraulic levers which do not incorporate Di2 buttons. I'm sure you can appreciate that Cervelo cannot deliver modified Shimano parts, but it's dead easy to do yourself or have your shop do it, hillbilly or not. Have your shop mechanic google "DIY Di2 TT." By the way, the P5 fits all wheels known today, including the Sub 9. Cheers, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer

So the factory DI2 does not have brake lever shifters- I am sorely disappointed if not , I am first on the list at a local shop for one. I sure hope I am wrong It just is not right to have to hillbilly full function on a 10K bike-- Boys get it right also did you fix the sub-9 issue as well?

Hi Peter, Demand for S5 VWD has been completely through the roof. Delivery at this point could well be for MY2013 in the fall. There is one way to get this bike…get your order in with your Cervelo retailer and get in the queu for the fastest road bike on the planet! Cheers, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer

I am really excited about the p5 coming out! The Tour will very exciting!!! Does anyone know when they will be selling the S5 vwd version for 2012. I want to buy one soon, but the stores say Cervelo is not selling them right now. Okay. When then? Thanks Cervelo-please email me with the answer. The dealers don't seem to care...their attitude is, "We don't know what Cervelo ever does?!" So I am asking you. Peter-D. Munoz

Hi Gordon, thanks for your order. Officially, there's no provision for operating Di2 from the Magura brake levers. Unofficially, I'm aware of many bike shops who have cut and soldered the "climbing" Di2 accessory buttons to work from the brake levers. Try googling "shimano di2 climbing buttons diy" Cheers, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer

Are there are any provisions for operating di2 from the magura brake levers, or is it only from the bar ends? P5 has been ordered. Gordon

Hi eaton, Glad you like the P5! We agree it's a paradigm shift and I hope your customers enjoy the P5s you can set them up with. Cheers, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer.

Hi Tommy, The P5 uses two Di2 elecrtic wires. The first one is "ISM-EW79A-I2, TT Brake/Shift Lever Front Wiring Kit". This is a new part number from Shimano this year. Without the trailing 2 it's shorter, with the 2 it's longer. Both work, but the extra length makes it easier, especially on frames size 56 and larger. The second one is "IEW7975A-1 Rear Full Internal Wire Kit". This includes the battery mount and related wires and is pretty normal. Cheers, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer.

Hi, I know the P5 will run the Di2 cable internally, but what model number of di2 cable set will be use for P5? for example: (EW-7975-A-1) for S5

I am in love with this bike and I am looking forward to this bike when we are able to get a hold of this bike for customers. I believe the paradigm shift that cervelo has managed to make to the industry is to visualize the bike as a collection of components, namely the frame, drinking system and storage solutions. All components have symbiotic benefits to each other. Can't wait to see this!

Hi J. Ens, Glad you like the P5! Yes, the Hidden Pocket opens to the back of the seat tube so you must remove the wheel first. Battery charge lasts a long time, so removing a wheel once in a while shouldn't be too difficult. And for non-Di2 builds, statistically most punctures are rear tires, so if your spare tube is in there most of the time you're already removing the rear wheel... Cheers, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer

Hi Samuel, It's not necessary to have access to the junction box at all times, but when it's accessible it can make it more convenient for the rider to check battery charge status or adjust the derailleur (for example, after a wheel change). The rider is free to choose either option: inside or outside. Cheers, -Damon Rinard, Cervelo Engineer

I really like this bike, good work! Do I have to remove the rear wheel to access the battery for loading?

May I ask why one would ever want to have access to the junction box at all times? May I for an explanation for the rest of the last paragraph too? For example, what is the "more visible option" for? It doesn't make sense it's referring to the cable routing.
