Wild now tops GC after win and 3rd in TT
Kirsten Wild (NED) now sits atop the GC at the Holland Ladies Tour after today's two stages. Wild won the fifth stage, 80.4 km road race this morning and placed third in this afternoons' time trial. That combination gave her a minute and three second lead over former GC leader Martine Bras who now sits in sixth place. Wild has a three second lead on second place Marianne Vos (NED) going into tomorrow's final stage.
Vos placed second in both stages today. Shelley Olds (USA) took third position in the fifth stage road race. Ellen Van Dijk (NED) won the sixth stage time trial. Wild's teammates Charlotte Becker (GER) placed fifth in the time trial and Regina Bruins (NED) placed sixth, a strong showing overall from Cervélo TestTeam who now have four places in the GC top ten!
"I am especially happy with my victory today," said Kirsten Wild. "Every little bit helps and this second sprint victory certainly proved successful for me. There was a big crash this morning in the final. I came in a group behind the bunch with Sara and Charlotte, with just 500 meter before we reached the front of the peloton and was able to win the stage, a special win."
"This morning's race was very exciting. There was a breakaway that our Regina Bruins (NED) was part of, but we decided not to work in this break because Liesbeth de Vocht (BEL) was part of the break and has a higher ranking than Regina," said Jean Paul Van Poppel, Sports Director. So finally every thing came back, but unfortunately there was big crash in the last five kilometers. Kirsten crashed and we were afraid she would miss the bunch sprint, but with the impressive help of Sarah Düster (GER) and Charlotte Becker (GER) Kirsten back with 500 meters to go and was able to sprint for the win of the stage."
On today's 6th stage Time Trial
"Ellen van Dijk (NED- HTC Columbia) won today with a time of 17:04, Marianne Vos (NED-Nederland Bloeit) had the same time, just hundreds of a second behind and finished second," said Jean Paul Van Poppel, Sports Director, "Kirsten came in on 17.05 one second later for third. Kirsten had 4 seconds after her win this morning on Marianne Vos and now has a 3 second lead. It will be a nice fight for the win tomorrow between Marianne Vos and Kirsten."
"It was a heavy time trial today. We were on the same course as this morning so I was familiar with it. But it was hard for me and I had a difficult time in the middle of the race but found my time on the end, so with third, I can be happy," said Kirsten Wild. "I lost a second at the end to Marianne Vos, so she is now 3 seconds behind me in the GC. This is not a bad situation but we will have to work hard tomorrow for the victory. There will be 2 bonus sprints and than the final sprint, it will be an exciting day."
