Despite a valiant late stage effort from Theo Bos (NED), Matthew Goss (AUS- HTC-Columbia) won the sprint today at the first stage of Tour of Denmark 2010 from Holstebro in Holstebro. The stage was 170 km, with three local laps that began 4.8 kilometer's from the finish". The end of the stage was marred by rain that contributed to the crash near the final as several riders went down on the wet asphalt. The crash caused divisions in the peloton and Goss was able to win the sprint in a small group, ahead of Michael Van Stayen (BEL-Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator) and Mark Renshaw (AUS-HTC-Columbia) who finished third. Goss also assumes the yellow jersey with his victory. Bos finished in sixth position.
"Today was the opening stage at the Tour of Denmark. Our riders, Iñigo Cuesta (SPA) and our new stagiaire Alexander Wetterhall (SWE) worked hard with HTC-Columbia and Team Saxo Bank to close the gap on the five-man breakaway. They succeeded and the group was pulled quickly back into the bunch, with two laps to go. The other significant event today saw our rider Theo Bos (NED) narrowly miss the stage victory in a final sprint. In the last line Theo came into good position in the last corner. With 200 meters to go he was passing Goss but Goss closed the door on him and Theo managed to stay on the bike and avoid a crash. It's unfortunate this happened otherwise he could have won the stage today."
