Emma Pooley second on the top of Stelvio

July 10, 2010 - Filed under: TestTeam
Emma Pooley (GBR) put in another second place performance today at the 9th stage of the Giro Donne. The 68.5 km course from Livigno to the Passo Stelvio (which is 2757 meters high) was long and tough. Mara Abbott (USA) was again the strongest in the mountains and took the stage victory, 25 seconds ahead of Pooley and Judith Arndt (GER). Claudia Häusler (GER), last year's winner of the Giro Donne, also rode a good race, finishing 7th. In the GC, Abbott now leads with 2:08 ahead of Judith Arndt. Claudia Häusler, in fourth place is the best-placed rider for Cervélo TestTeam with Emma Pooley right behind Claudia in fifth.

"It was a tough race but our riders did a good job," said Egon van Kessel, Cervélo TestTeam Sports Director. "Emma was dropped in the last descent and was a 1:20 behind the leaders when they came to the Stelvio. Carla Ryan (AUS) helped her and Emma moved back into the lead group in the first part of the uphill. She also attacked and tried to escape but it didn't worked out and finally Mara Abbott found her chance 1.5 km from the top. Emma did not have the power to follow anymore, maybe losing too much in the chase. Also Claudia also rode a strong race. She was always on the offensive searching for her chance with the motto ‘top or flop'. At the end she finished among the top ten and now enjoys a top five GC position.

Tomorrow the tenth and final stage of the Giro Donne is on the schedule, the stage consists of a 115 km course around Monza.

Certainly Mara Abbott is a big surprise. But from your newsletter I understand that Emma lost 5 minutes caused by a puncture. How come? Emma is now almost 7 minutes behind.

The 5min time-loss may have reduced her motivation for first place and therefore have led to losing the giro.

It is a shame, terribile, dommage a.s.o.
