German native Sarah Düster won the 5th stage today of the International Thüringen Rundfahrt. The Cervélo TestTeam rider completed the final sprint of the 115 km course around Schmölln and the jury gave her first place over Hanka Kupfernagel (GER - German National Team) and the Dutch Adrie Visser (HTC Columbia) who placed third. The Russian Olga Zabelinskaja (Safi-Pasta Zara) remains the leader in the overall ranking.
“I’m very happy with my victory today. I haven’t felt that strong during the first few days of this Tour as the heat really got to me. But now, since yesterday as the temperatures have gotten lower I feel good,” said Sarah Düster. “Today, it was tough for me as I had to close so many gaps, but I felt strong. My tactic for the final, which was a light downhill run with a curve, was to stay at the wheel of Hanka Kupfernagel and attack from there. All in all, I am very satisfied with my race and I have also to say thank you to my team mates as they did a really good job for me.”
“Today we had quite a bit of activity in the first half of the race. A group of seventeen riders broke away at the beginning and soon after ten riders escaped from them, including Sarah Düster,” said Egon von Kessel, Sports Director, Cervélo TestTeam. “Sarah was very much on the offensive and tried many attacks towards the finish. Though she was strong, she couldn’t develop a big gap. At the finish, there was a very close sprint. After the judges reviewed it they awarded Sarah first place. It was a good race for us. The only negative thing was that Charlotte had to stop the race due to health problems. Tomorrow our goal will be again to go for a stage win but we will not to take too many risks.”
The sixth and last stage of the women’s 23rd international Thüringen Rundfahrt will take place tomorrow on a course of 134.5 km around Zeulenroda.
