Hushovd strong after Tirreno-Adriatico and ready for Milan-San Remo

March 16, 2010 - Filed under: TestTeam
The 45th Tirreno-Adriatico, the race of the two seas, ended this afternoon with a final sprint to San Benedetto del Tronto. The seventh stage (164 km) that began in Civitanova Marche, was won by Edvald Boasson Hagen (Nor-Team Sky) who outsprinted Alessandro Petacchi (Ita-Lampre) and Sacha Modolo (Colnago - CSF Inox) to take the win. Stefano Garzelli (Ita-Acqua & Sapone) takes
the overall victory snatching victory from defending champion Michele Scarponi (Ita-Androni Giocattoli) who was leading Garzelli by two seconds when the race began today. Best result for Cervélo TestTeam was 18th from Thor Hushovd.

"Today's plan was to set up Thor Hushovd (Nor) for the bunch sprint, to put everything on him and give him some confidence in anticipation of Milan-San Remo, said Jean-Paul van Poppel, sports director. "Androni Giocattoli, race leader Michele Scarponi ‘s team were intent on not giving up any bonus points to Stefano Garzelli who started the stage two seconds behind Scarponi. There was a break away during the stage but Acqua & Sapone, Garzelli's team pulled them back into the bunch. Garzelli then won points in the intermediate sprints and became the virtual leader, a position he successfully defended through the finish. The stage ended in a bunch sprint and our team showed their strength and did a lot of work in the last 25 kilometres. In the last kilometre Brett Lancaster (Aus) came into the wrong position after a crash at the front of the peloton, consequently he was not able to provide the perfect lead out to Thor. So Thor came up to the front too early and was not able to sprint for the win today."
