6th stage at Tirreno-Adriatico proves to be a hard one

March 15, 2010 - Filed under: TestTeam
The penultimate stage of Tirreno-Adriatico was claimed today by, Mikhail Ignatiev (Rus-Katusha) with a hard fought solo finish. Initially part of a twelve-man break, Ignatiev was the only member to stay clear of the chase group. Attacking his fellow escapees some eight kilometres from the finish, he managed to hold on for the win besting Stefano Garzelli (Ita-Acqua & Sapone) who finished second and Cadel Evans (Aus-BMC Racing) in third. Garzelli's result today now puts him just 2 seconds behind GC leader Michele Scarponi (Ita -Androni-Giocatolli) while Evans moves up one position into third, 12 seconds back. Roger Hammond had the best result for Cervélo TestTeam today finishing in forty-sixth position.

"Stage 6 today was over 134 kilometres and proved to be a hard one," said Jean-Paul van Poppel, sport director. "Today we started with a team that was hoping to do something for Thor, though we realised soon enough that the circuit was too hard for us to make the move we wanted. The peloton raced hard throughout the stage but we decided to spare our energy for tomorrow's finish. Tirreno-Adriatico always finishes in San Benedetto del Tronto and the end stage 7 will be a sprinter's battle so we will try to bring Thor into the best position possible for the final."

Stage 6: Montecosaro - Macerata 134km

1. Mikhail Ignatiev (Rus) Katusha
2. Stefano Garzelli (Ita) Acqua & Sapone
3. Cadel Evans (Aus) BMC Racing Team
46. Roger Hammond (GBr) Cervelo Test Team
