Roger Hammond active in day’s breakaway

March 14, 2010 - Filed under: TestTeam
Caught from his breakaway in the final kilometre by Stefano Garzelli (Ita-Acqua & Sapone), who finished second and teammate Maxim Iglinsky (Kaz-Astana) who finished third, Enrico Gasparotto (Ita- Astana) won today's fifth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico in the final sprint from the four-man split, Cadel Evans (Aus-BMC) was the fourth man in the break.

"A hard stage again before we roll into the last two stages which you can say are a little bit easier but still hard," said Jean-Paul van Poppel, sports director. "Today Roger Hammond is our man. He tried to go in a breakaway and after 45 kilometres he is successful with five riders. Then another six riders joined the break, bringing it to eleven. He was a bit unlucky because there is a GC rider Marco Pinotti (Ita- Columbia) with them who is 1:46 behind in the GC so the main group keeps chasing him and the eleven riders never get more than four minutes out from the main bunch. They get out in front and at about 160 kilometres there is the last hard climb of Tirreno and they are caught there. Roger did really well while the rest of the team took it easy after they were dropped on that climb and they take their time to get to the finish. They want to be good for the last two stages and they want to be ready for Milan-San Remo. No one crashed today, good weather 12 degrees, the sun was shining, it was beautiful today."

Stage 5: Chieti - Colmurano 216km
1 Enrico Gasparotto (Ita) Astana
2 Stefano Garzelli (Ita) Acqua & Sapone
3 Maxim Iglinskiy (Kaz) Astana
