Tondo finishes 20th in final Paris-Nice GC

March 14, 2010 - Filed under: TestTeam
Amaël Moinard (Fra-Cofidis) claimed both the final stage victory and the Mountain's classification today winning the seventh and final stage of Paris-Nice. Alberto Contador (Esp-Astana) secured his second overall Paris-Nice victory. Moinard edged out Thomas Voeckler (Fra -Bbox Bouygues Telecom), his companion in today's breakaway on the final ascent of the Col d'Eze and the downhill run to Nice with Nicolas Roche (Irl-AG2R La Mondiale) capturing third. Best result for Cervélo TestTeam was Xaiver Tondo (Esp) in 16th position. Tondo was twentieth in the final GC and has raced a very strong Paris-Nice capped by his solo victory in yesterday's stage. Today's stage (119km) both started and finished in Nice.

"Daniel Lloyd was involved in a big crash. His hand was very sore but I am pleased to report everything is ok" and nothing is broken. Today's stage was like yesterday but shorter of course. We asked the boys to do more or less the same tactics as yesterday though we were not as strong, but it's ok as we had a good Paris Nice," said Philippe Mauduit, sports director. "We reached our overall goal to win one stage though we missed having anybody in the top 10. We did miss Joaquin and Heinrich maybe things would have been different? But Tondo was there again today with the top class riders and it's just a confirmation he is a good rider and a good guy always positive, always ready to do his best."

"In the final kilometre there were a lot of attacks to hold the yellow jersey but Le Credit en Ligne was strong. I am a little tired today after yesterday but finally I ride with the best riders and it was a really good job today," said Xaiver Tondo. "I am looking forward to the Giro, in helping Carlo and I am only thinking of this, though I would also like to do well in other races like the Amstel or La Fléche Wallonne."
