Team Garmin-Sharp entered the 2014 Tour de France with a fresh new squad including a few Tour first-timers. And despite hitting some bad luck with riders picking up injuries throughout the early stages, and a heartbreaking finish for Jack Bauer in stage 15, the team remained committed and united until the end.
With the Tour winding down, and opportunities to win thinning, Team Garmin-Sharp seized a huge opportunity in Stage 19. The team went on the attack early placing Tom-Jelte Slagter in the break. Slagter, aboard the S3, was the last man standing when the pack closed in on the final category 4 climb of the day.
As the peloton gathered up the break, Ramunas attacked on the rain soaked climb and went on to ride solo through the challenging finish. What seemed an impossible task – to hold off the entire peloton by himself – started to become a reality in the closing metres. Ramunas applied relentless pressure to the pedals of his R5 all the way to the end earning a true team victory for Garmin-Sharp. Congratulations, Team!
