Jakub Macel has been working in the Cervélo Customer Service and Technical Support role for a number of years. Currently riding a P5 Six and a Soloist Carbon, Jakub’s real passion for riding comes from the sport of triathlon; a tradition that has become a huge part of the Macel Family.
Like a true triathlete, Jakub started with swimming at the age of 8 years old. He excelled in the pool and went on to race for years. His older sister Tereza, an accomplished swimmer as well, first introduced Jakub to triathlon. She started racing in 1995 and Jakub watched as her career quickly grew. Tereza went on to a number of victories in both short and long course races culminating in professional victories at Ironman Lake Placid and Ironman Canada as a member of teamTBB.
Not to be outdone by his older sister, Jakub borrowed Tereza’s custom painted pink Cervélo Soloist Carbon and set out to do his first triathlon in August of 2006. Obviously quick out of the water, he pushed himself to the limit on both the bike and run. Jakub says that all he can remember is “puking at the end of that race.” Clearly he had caught the tri-sport bug.
While he first learned to ride a bike at age 3, Jakub says that he didn’t start “to really turn the pedals with purpose” until the age of 30. Now, in his sixth year of the sport, he has really taken it to the next level. His 2012 performance in St Croix has qualified him for Vegas 70.3 World Championships. However, he didn’t stop there. A 25th place overall finish at Ironman Lake Placid put Jakub into 5th place in his competitive age group qualifying him for Ironman World Championships in Kona.
Jakub was on the island during the race last year working to support Cervélo riders as they prepared. The challenging course and exhilarating atmosphere of the event had a huge impact on him. Inspired by the performance of every athlete he met last year, Jakub cannot wait to return to the island and put on his own race numbers. Until then, he continues to ride, train and help customers along the way.
