Squoval is a blend of square and oval. Squared tubes locate more material far from center to reduce side-to-side flex, while convex walls and rounded corners improve torsional stiffness and resist buckling. Cervélo engineers wrote custom software to develop Squoval, a collection of tube shapes that provides the perfect blend. We researched the exact shape, radii and interdependency between shape and material.
Cervélo invented Squoval in 2006 with the first R3, and there have been lots of “square” copies since. However, Cervélo’s Project California engineering effort further refined Squoval tube shapes, allowing us to further reduce weight and increase stiffness exactly where needed. The benefit is a lighter, stiffer frame you can feel in the real world.
