| "First Tour" Limited Edition |
| |
|
|
To commemorate the Cervélo TestTeam’s first Tour de France, and Carlos Sastre’s position as defending champion, this model is available in very limited quantities in the black and yellow TdF design. You can order the exact same frame as ridden by Carlos Sastre in this year’s Tour; sold together with an authentic yellow jersey signed by Carlos, and a certificate of authenticity signed by Cervélo’s co-founders Phil White and Gerard Vroomen, this is a one-time opportunity for a very unique Cervélo collection.

“Best carbon frame” - Tour Magazine Germany
The Cervélo R3 SL is quite possibly the fastest bike that we have ever tested” - Cycling Plus
“Tour-winning bike” would be an easy way to get your attention (and I guess we just did), but that’s not so relevant. What is relevant is that the rider, Carlos Sastre, can’t imagine riding anything else. And that the world’s toughest magazine test from TOUR in Germany clearly show the R3 SL to be the best combination of stiffness, low weight and comfort.
Add to that the impact strength and incredible fatigue life (passing our internal tests, which are several times higher than the industry levels) and it is clear why the R3 SL is a favorite among consumers and reviewers alike. And why riders are chomping at the bit to join our new Cervélo TestTeam.

Lighter frame – We don’t like to talk about weights, as many other manufacturers have made a mockery of it with outlandish claims. If weight is important to you, ignore claimed weights, have your retailer weigh the frames and see how light the R3 SL is compared to its competitors in the real world.

| Highlights |
| |
|
Squoval downtube & chainstays - Optimized for the highest possible stiffness-to-weight ratio (STW).
Multi-shape toptube - Squoval at both ends and oval in the middle to counter the complex loads.
Oversized bottom bracket area – Large diameter and smooth, optimized shapes increase bottom bracket stiffness for excellent power transfer from pedal to rear wheel.
Lay-up optimization – In theory, 90Msi ultra-high modulus carbon is great. Extremely stiff, you only need very little of it to make a stiff frame. Unfortunately, it is near impossible to work with and not very strong, so you can’t use it everywhere in the frame and most factories cannot use it at all. That’s why only two bike companies use it in their frames. Cervélo is one of them, in select areas of the R3 SL and the S3.
Ultra thin seatstays - With the Squoval chainstays resisting forces so effectively, the seatstays can be very minimalist. By making them wide but thin, they resist lateral bending in the rear triangle while minimizing weight. In other words, the rear triangle is stiff where it needs to be for efficient power transfer from pedal to rear wheel without an undue weight penalty.

The dominant forces on the downtube and chainstays are lateral bending forces. The best way to resist those is with a lot of material far away from the center plane. Square tubes do this best, but can easily buckle. A slightly ovalized square creates the best of both worlds, which explains why Cervélo’s Squoval shaped frames win stiffness and lightweight tests everywhere.
The front and rear of the toptube also use the Squoval shape to counteract lateral bending, but it transitions to oval in the center to counteract the torsional loading in that section.

| Smartwall® for Carbon |
R3 frames ready for assembly at our Toronto facility
|
| |
|
| Upon hearing Smartwall, most people immediately think of Cervélo’s method to obtain excellent lateral stiffness in an TrueAero tube. But the Smartwall principle is universally applicable, not just on aero tubing. After the tube shapes are optimized, the lay-up allows us to further refine the character of the bike. In fact, Squoval tubes are very well suited for the Smartwall application as they have two sides that are very far removed from the central plane – i.e. adding even a small amount of extra material there increases the lateral stiffness significantly. To properly distribute the loads from the Smartwall section into the rest of the tubes, the additional plies are feathered. |

| Geometry |
| |
|
No custom Cervélo is needed even for the most demanding pros, that’s our conclusion after supporting hundreds of the world’s best athletes. The reason we don’t need customs where other bike companies do lies in our unique reach-based geometry. For an exhaustive explanation on why 6 Cervélo sizes fit more people than 12 “normal” sizes, check out our geometry tech presentation.
