Dominating the Points race in Beijing, the P3 Track took five of the top-10 spots, including Gold and Silver. In the Team Pursuit, Denmark took Silver on the same bike and later won Gold at the World Championships in the same discipline. Where most manufacturers use different frames for their pursuit and sprint stars on the track, Cervélo uses one and the same frame because the P3 Track is a perfect combination of light weight, stiffness and aerodynamics.

Unbeatable aerodynamics - All the details that make the P3 an aerodynamic stand-out are incorporated into the P3 Track.
Superior bottom bracket stiffness & weight – We focus on bb stiffness with every frame we design, so making the P3 Track stiff enough for trackies (usually a big problem) proved no issue at all – the standard P3 lay-up sufficed. Hence we are able to achieve this stiffness without the excessive weight usually associated with track frames.
Aero headtube - no bulky nose cone, but an extremely thin, aerodynamically optimized shape
CCS - Constant Cross-section Seattube - The airflow over the seattube is predominantly horizontal. The new seattube shape has a cross section shape that is separately optimized everywhere between bottom bracket and the seatstay joint.
New dual position seatpost - An extremely narrow profile, two positions for sprint and pursuit racing.
Integrated Seattube collar – Invisible to the airflow, while still allowing the seatmast to be removed, this design is both the most aero and allows for easy adjustment and traveling. Not unimportant if you live some distance away from the track.

| Airplanes require different airfoils than bicycles. Sounds logical, but many companies are so proud to say their airfoils come from the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA). So did we, 13 years ago. But now, we design our own specific airfoils, and it has led to significant improvements. It’s one of the reasons why we spend weeks and weeks in the windtunnel each year, not hours (if any) as is customary in the industry. When you have the most and the best engineers working on aerodynamic improvements and you give them more time to play in the windtunnel sand box than anybody else, you end up with faster bikes. Simple.

| Smartwall for Carbon |

Patent-pending technology from our carbon materials and manufacturing group, Smartwall elaborates on the Squoval tubeshape. With the sides far away from the center plane more important, we concentrate more material there to increase the benefit.
Strips of High and Ultra-high modulus carbon stiffen the sides of the main tubes to resist lateral bending. These strips are feathered in to properly transfer the loads from the joints into these tubes.
Finally, we add Kevlar to the headtube/downtube area for industry-leading impact strength.

October 2006: Luke Roberts, 2004 Olympic Gold medallist Team Pursuit - I gave the P3 a good hit out on the indoor track in Buttgen, Germany last Friday. It rode awesome, I was extremely impressed. It also attracted a hell of a lot of attention, many people said it was like a 2 wheel version of Schumacher's Ferrari.

The two seatpost positions on the dedicated P3C Track seatpost correspond with logical sprint (74-75 degrees) and modern pursuit (76-78 degrees) seattube angles. Of course, it is also possible to use the 74-75 degree position for a more traditional pursuit position.

| UCI Approval |

During the development of the P2 and P3 models, Cervélo has ensured that these models comply with the new UCI regulations that came into effect on January 1, 2000. The main points of the new rules are:
- Frames have to be of a double diamond lay-out
- Both wheels have to be the same size
- All tubes have to fit within a 80mm wide template, except near the joints where more room is allowed
- A credit card has to fit between the seattube and the tire. Don't jam it through, as the official may not try that either. Just play it safe, and if there is any trouble sliding the credit card through, move the wheel a millimeter further back. A 3mm gap will enable a credit card to slip through without a problem (2.1mm should do it theoretically). The horizontal drop-outs of our TT bikes enable the rider to achieve the appropriate gap irrespective of the size of tire used.
Several national federations are working on a grace period so that people with old bikes can still compete in events. But this grace period will likely only apply to bikes purchased before January 1, 2000, so if you are looking to buy a new bike, please ensure that your bike is approved by the UCI.
